When you think of muscle cars, you might think of the optioned-up models, such as SS, GT, R/T, etc. as the top of the heap. And while those models represent the era very well, you could have very easily been outrun by a vehicle like the ’65 Chevelle 300 Deluxe pictured here. While many of the 300 Deluxe cars were built with inline six-cylinder engines, or low horsepower 283ci V8′s, a select few were built with the very potent L79 code 327ci small block. Back in ’65, you could order a car any way you wanted it. Apparently, the original purchaser of this Chevelle wanted based model looks with the 350 horsepower small block–the highest horsepower engine available that year, aside from the ultra rare Z-16 big block version. The fact of the matter is the L79 300 Deluxe may be just as rare as the Z-16. Either way, this two-door post sedan is very sneaky, and it’s much lighter than its optioned-up counterparts.
John Kokoska of Powder Springs, Georgia owns this particular car, and let us grab some pictures of it so we could show it off. The car is very original, and very, very clean. It is a fine example of a nicely restored (but not overdone) muscle car, and it certainly sparks some interesting conversations at car shows and cruise nights. John told us all of the details about the car, including the fact that its only real options are the is the L79 engine, four speed manual transmission and Chevrolet’s “Comfort and Convenience Group” which included windshield washer, a heater and back up lights. So very convenient!
Overall, the car offers a nice look back into the sneaky nature of car guys and hot rodders. Obviously, the car was ordered this way for a reason, and John actually knows that the car has some drag racing history, so that makes it even cooler. The car definitely has a hard time hooking up 350 horsepower on those tiny BFGoodrich Silvertown 7.35-14 tires, but that is the original size tire, wrapped around the body-color steel wheels. It’s a great combination that can be transferred to many other muscle car applications to provide the sleeper look. We would like to thank John for his hospitality, and information on the car.
