Today was one of three Championship Days. Am not really sure what that means this year because the scoring is all different than before…but we knew it was important to get a good score! Every participant pulls a number for start order for Champ days the day before. Theresa pulled 7th car out which means we had to get up early AGAIN for the 730 AM start. Problem is i wake up at 5 AM every stinking day any way EASTERN Time. There’s always lots to do to get ready for the day. Cameron and Greg drew a late number so they got to sleep in. I think they were 56th car out.
It was almost cold leaving Albuquerque…we bundled up as you might know our Shafer 8 is a little airish! We got started on the course with our game faces on after a bad score on stage 10 into Albuquerque.
The first check point caught us by surprise and then we ran up on the Sharps in front of us….it could only mean we missed a speed change sign. After checking, we determined it was probably before the check point so now we were screwed up on two legs!!!! Thats what is called double jeopardy. We “hacked” the Sharps in front of us and settled back to a minute behind them and were stopped by a tech stop (red sign) meant that the leg ended and that there would be a new restart after sone construction. We cruised into the next little town to find that most everyone missed the “reduced speed ahead” sign just before the check point and EVERYONE was relieved that the transit was thrown and given a new restart. Saved a lot of guessing! Some times we would rather be luckier than good!
We rallied into Saint Johns City, Arizona to a great welcome by the town, the local car club and some great navajo tacos.
After lunch we rallied a couple of more hours before getting a pit stop in Winslow, Arizona. It was “such a fine sight to see”. I was “standing on the corner” in Winslow, Arizona…..
Today was another one of those days we have had lately where we take our rain suit off and on. We left Winslow looking for rain, and the end of the day. We moved across a time zone again into Mountain time which means we rallied for another hour today more than yesterday. The “show time” in the evening always kicks up about 6 PM local time, so we gotta work til they are ready.
We rallyed by a beautiful Park called Mary’s lake. I could live here. Tall lodge pole pines, snow in winter, cool mornings, elk, deer, cowboys. I love the west.
We FINALLY finished the day to a great reception in Flagstaff. We really did pretty good today. We placed 6th for the day and got a 13 something. Theresa was elated and cried for joy because as she says we had worked just as hard each day and gotten crummy scores so it was a verification that we don’t stink all the time anyway.
Cameron and Greg got caught up in the construction zone time delay and a wreck which really messed up their momentum. I feel for them too, they have really tried hard and not done so great either. Both of those guys know what they are doing and just cant get a break.
Tomorrow will be hot, hot and more hot going into Nevada. I will sweat like a pig. Theresa will glisten.
From the road! and…wearing out tires!!!!
