Driven Dirty – Day Four West (Mike’s Day)
“It was 29 degrees when we left our hotel in Amarillo with Albuquerque, New Mexico in our sights. Corky and I had re-installed our specially designed lexan roadster windows in a 40 mph windstorm the night before so my guest passenger and I traveled in absolute comfort and the car performed flawlessly.”
“Famed Hot Rod enthusiast, authority, author, and all round good guy, Ken Gross has road tested and written about some of the world’s finest automobiles. He rode shotgun with me in the morning and took a turn piloting our Double Exposure Deuce in the afternoon. Ken related that the car handled well, that the blown flathead had a remarkable amount of torque and pep and that he was impressed. ”
“Most of Friday’s drive paralleled the historically famous Route 66 with its equally famous and numerous automotive culture landmarks. The terrain clearly has changed now with huge skies and desert landscapes.”
“We skipped lunch and cruised in to see Dave Malcolm and Family at Malcolm’s Wrecker. In addition to being greeted by Dave and family we were welcomed by about 10 or 12 street rodders. Seems like you never meet a stranger in a hot rod.”
“We then stopped in to see an open-air metal working establishment during our day. The Two Brothers Steel Company is a second-generation business run by Eddie and Dan Stoner. I love metal working machinery so this stop was very interesting for me!” Ed and Dan’s father made all of the metal working equipment himself. There was a windmill designed to be their air compressor.”
“We were invited for drinks and a Southwestern dinner at the home of Ed and Mella Barella. We had good conversation, good food, we saw some neat stuff at Eddie’s hot rod hang out and had a million dollar view of Albuquerque. It was a beautiful home and the hospitality we received was unsurpassed!”
“After dinner several of us hard-core types (Scott Whitaker, Josh Shaw, Ken Gross and myself) loaded up and went to pay a visit to my friend, Joe Abbin at Road-runner Engineering. Joe built the engine in our Double Exposure Deuce and did a tremendous work and delivered on time. Joe knows Flatheads! Thanks for all the support Joe!”
From the road,
Honest Mike Goodman, hisself
PS. Posie is still trailering his car, Steve Moal and Brian Brennan are still topless, Scott Whitaker’s Dynaliner is still very cool, Gollahan’s Brookville 32 Coupe is perfect, and our Double Exposure Deuce on Coker Tires are performing flawlessly!
