The 2009 Coker Tire Challenge
There comes a time when sitting in a camp chair by your shined up old car just isn’t enough anymore. Drag racing and vintage road racing aren’t exactly the cheapest ways to spend your Saturday afternoon either. For a growing number of enthusiasts VCRA rally events are becoming the venue of choice to enjoy their cars. Less show-n-shine and more “drive the wheels off” but somewhere short of 24 hours of Le Mans, these rallies pit driver and navigator against others teams on timed A-to-B stages over the course of a few days, often for prize money. The goal, leave point A and arrive at point B exactly on time while following the cryptic instructions designed to guide you at precise speeds through a predetermined route, and it’s even harder than it sounds. The Coker Tire Tour leg 1
Corky Coker got things heated up at the Saturday car show at Coker Tire with a hot lap around the building in one of his vintage fire engines. STREET RODDER Senior Editor Eric Geisert rides shotgun.

39th Annual Auburn Collector Car Auction and Show
Fourth Season of Bidding Wars in the making!
For the past four years the excitement of the Kruse Auburn Fall Auction has been shown to millions on the Masters Entertainment television show Bidding Wars. That tradition continued this year with the TV crew on site in the red ring adding to the action.
Hosting the action was Coker Tire owner and car enthusiast, Corky Coker. During their filming some great cars crossed the auction block included: Camaros, Corvettes, Galaxies, Chevelles, Impalas and even a 2008 Tango which sold for $5,500. Typically the television show starts up in the Fall and runs on Fox Sports Net.
Pictured is Coker and a film crew member introducing a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS Convertible before the auctioning began. The car got a high bid of $40,000.

California Automobile Museum Tour Group

The California Automobile Museum Group showed up at Coker Tire Company headquarters in a big ol’ bus ready to see some whitewalls. What they got were tours of the sales call center, marketing, administrative departments and then to the fun stuff in the machine shop, Honest Charley Garage, Honest Charley Speed Shop and the Museum. One of our favorite things is spending time with people who love old rides as much as we do, but you’re all in trouble if you come back here without driving your cars!!!! We enjoyed the visit and hope they did too.

Tire care tip: Long-term car storage
In an ideal world, a vehicle in storage for more that six months should be placed on blocks or jack stands to remove the weight of the vehicle from the tires. If it is not possible to place the vehicle on blocks or jack stands, there are a few steps you can follow to help protect your tires:
- Don’t store the vehicle near electric motors or other ozone-generating sources
- Inflate tires to recommended operating pressure. (Do not exceed the rim manufacturer’s inflation capacity)
- If the storage surface is concrete, drive the vehicle on carpet squares or wood blocks
- If your storage area is not heated, avoid moving the vehicle during extremely cold weather
- Move the vehicle at least every three months to prevent ozone cracking in the tire bulge area, as well as “flat-spotting” from the prolonged strain of sidewall and tread deflection
- Adjust inflation before putting the vehicle back into service

Ol’ Rusty Hits the Newsstands

Larry Harper’s ‘30 Model A pickup isn’t a stranger to the parking lots at Coker Tire Company or Honest Charley Speed Shop. The truck is cool and looks right at home around here. So cool, that “Rusty” made a four pager in October’s Car Kulture Deluxe Magazine. Even though it isn’t our truck, we still feel like proud parents when hot rods wearing our stuff make the press. Larry’s truck wears Firestone 7.50-15 grooved rears and 5.00-15 ribbed Front runners from Coker and who knows how many goodies from Honest Charley. That truck never looked more at home than in the pages of a magazine( …well except maybe in front of Honest). (more…)
